  • Topical Treatments

    Topical treatments-medications applied to the skin helps in slowing down or normalising cell reproduction and reducing psoriasis inflammation. Topical treatments are usually the first line of defence in treating psoriasis. Psoriasis causes dry patches on the skin which can be extremely itchy and uncomfortable. Topical treatments such as creams, lotions, foams, solutions, ointments and sprays can be used directly on your skin or scalp for relief.

  • Types of Topicals

    • Moisturizers and emollient helps control flare-ups. Thick and greasy lotions help to trap moisture in your skin.
    • Salicylic acid helps in getting rid of scales that show up on patches of psoriasis. You can easily find salicylic acid in gels, lotions, soaps and shampoos. Other medications work better when flakes of dead skin are removed.
    • Steroids are mostly prescribed by doctors but are also available over the counter. It helps with slowing down the growth of skin cells and helps with inflammation. Steroids often come in different strengths. Stronger formulas work for elbows and knees and the weaker formula work for sensitive areas such as the neck, face, groin or armpit.
    • Retinoids such as tazarotene can help shedding and speeding up the growth of skin cells. Most of these gels and creams are made with vitamin A and come in different strengths.
    Most importantly, it is highly advised for psoriasis and vitiligo patients to wear sunscreen at all times. Sunscreen helps in protecting the skin from harmful UV rays. There is no type or brand of sunscreen that is better than another when it comes to psoriasis and vitiligo, but it is strongly recommended to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Broad spectrum sunscreen blocks both UVA and UVB rays. In vitiligo patients, the two goals of sunscreen treatments are to: limit tanning of normal pigmented skin and to protect unpigmented involved skin from sunburn reaction.

    Tea Tree Oil
    is probably one of the best essential oils that can help in treating psoriasis and vitiligo. It is obtained from the leaves of a plant native to Australia. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It helps in rejuvenating body cells and reducing swelling and inflammation caused by psoriasis. It can be applied topically over affected areas and can it can also be used with a diffuser.
    Lavender Oil
    contains antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that work against microbes and prevent further infection. It helps in soothing psoriasis and reducing pain and inflammation. It can be applied topically and it can also be used with a diffuser.
    Jojoba Oil
    works as a carrier oil and it works as moisturizer to help soothe the skin and repair damaged skin cell tissues.
    Chamomile Oil
